A paddling group takes a quiet journey on the bay of Green Bay near Fish Creek, beneath the haze of a wildfire sky. Wildfire smoke from western Canada caused hazy skies in mid-May over Door County. This week, the haze was back, but, according to the National Weather Service, it was coming from a different direction: Nova Scotia and Quebec. In what's been reported as the worst wildfire season in Canada's modern history, some 9.3 million acres out of the country's 2.4 billion acres have burned between March 1 and June 5 of this year.

Meanwhile, a persistent lack of rain has created drought conditions across Wisconsin, including within Door County. The unseasonable aridity has caused several municipalities in the county to declare bans on burning, so check with your municipality before you burn. As of June 7, almost all of Wisconsin was in the High Fire Danger category. Only 16 counties, all in the northwest, were in a moderate range.
