Kazakhstan has presented plans to launch the so-called “Seamless Transit” project along the Northern Corridor between China and Europe in early 2025. It would enable automatic registration of container trains and is already in use on the China – Kazakhstan – Uzbekistan corridor.
With automatic container train registration at border crossings, the Seamless Transit project’s implementation on the Northern Corridor is aimed at simplifying and speeding up freight transit from China on the way to Europe. At the moment, it is already in use at the Altynkol border point for trains going to Uzbekistan, write Russian media.
As a key transit country, Kazakhstan is looking to facilitate Chinese freight traffic and profit from the transit revenue. It seems that the Kazakh technology is now catching on with Russia and Belarus as well. The countries want to implement the Seamless Transit system in Q1 2025 along the Northern Corridor, that is, on the China – Kazakhstan – Russia – Belarus route.
The Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), of which Kazakhstan is also a member state, is looking to create a single transport space and implement digital technologies to streamline it. Within that framework, Kazakhstan presented the Seamless Transit project to its EAEU peers, looking to simplify freight transportation in Central Asia, along the Trans-Caspian route and Caucasus. Attendants of the EAEU meeting, where Kazakhstan presented its plans, also called for an expansion of the project to road transportation.
Asia – Europe rail freight is one of the key topics to be discussed at the European Silk Road Summit 2024, taking place in Vienna on 27-28 November.
Registrations for the yearly event are already open, while the programme, which this year highlights the fast-recovering China-Europe rail market, is shaping up.
